What is a D1 Category Vehicle?
Answer: A bus or coach that has 8-16 passenger seats and less than 8 metres overall length. Examples include minibuses operated by schools and activity groups.
To be eligible to take this test you must be 18 years old or over and take the following steps.
1. Visit us for a drivers medical, currently £65, phone us to book an appointment. The Doctor is with us every two weeks, you can use your own doctor but the cost will vary between £60 and £200. ORDER the FORMS you will need.
2. Send off the forms we will give you to the DVLA with your driving licence. It will normally take around 3 weeks for your new licence with provisional PCV D1 category to return. Contact us once you receive it and you can visit us for an assessment/trial lesson. This will give you the opportunity to see what we have to offer and we can suggest the correct duration of driver training to suit your ability. If you cannot visit us for an assessment you could book an 'average' length course.
3. Book your theory tests online at www.gov.uk/book-theory-test , you will need to take - PCV Theory Test & PCV Hazard Perception, and if you intend to drive for 'hire and reward' you will need to take the PCV Case Studies, contact us for advice if needed. You can either buy the Books and DVD's from us to revise to pass the theory tests or sign up with www.drivingtheory4all.co.uk
4. Once you have passed your theory tests then contact us to book your driver training course as suggested by the driving assessment or if you haven't had an assessment book a course duration you feel happy with and we will do our best to ensure you pass your PCV D1 Driving Test.
The driving test will last approximately 60 minutes, during which you will be required to complete a reversing exercise (see the picture below), then drive onto the roads during which you will complete uphill, downhill and angled starts, together with a controlled stop, door exercise at a bus stop and moving away from the side of road in traffic.
Letters of Thanks from customers.
I am just writing to say a huge thank you for helping me pass my PCV test last week - thereby to achieve a lifetime ambition! It was a most amazing week. I do not think I have ever experienced such a steep learning curve in my life, not when learning to drive a car nor even when learning to drive steam locomotives on the Ffestiniog Railway, and it is all credit to you that I was able to pass the test after just five days of tuition.
Andy was an absolutely excellent instructor. I cannot fault the way in which he built on my progress as the days went by, and he seemed to have planned it so that I peaked at just the right time. In fact, disappointed as I would have been not to have passed, I was almost more concerned at letting Andy down!
In retrospect I really enjoyed the week. Apart from being such a good instructor, Andy was also great company - and I look forward to being able to give him a footplate ride on one of steam locos when he and his family come to North Wales, hopefully next year.
Paul E Davies, 9th August 2008.
